Wilmington, DE—
Nason
Construction, Inc. made waves in the national construction
community this week when it became the first Delaware firm to
receive a first place Eagle Award in the Associated Builders and
Contractors’ (ABC) National Excellence in Construction
competition.
The award was presented to Nason Construction at the ABC
National Convention 2006 in Las Vegas, Nev. on March 17. Nason
was recognized with constructing the most outstanding Healthcare
project between $25-99 million in the country for their
performance on the $31.5 million Medical Building Expansion at
Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del.
This project excelled over many others in that category
including the $90 million Children’s Medical Center Tower III
constructed in Dallas, Texas which earned the second place Merit
Award.
As the construction manager
on this
122,000 s.f. infill and overbuild expansion, Nason Construction
was required to
coordinate work in, around, and above an occupied
Emergency Department (ED) and Operating Room Suites. The
expansion included some of the most technically complex hospital
spaces such as spine & brain surgical rooms, heart
catheterization & interventional radiology labs, and work inside
the Level 1
Trauma Center.
“The fact that all this
construction was accomplished while never compromising patient
safety nor closing any of our 24/7 activities is a major credit
to the teamwork and coordination of the whole Nason team,” said
Christiana Care Director of Design Services, J. Patrick Fugeman.
Fugeman was directly involved in the design of the expansion
along with architects Bernardon Haber Holloway of Wilmington and
Wilmot/Sanz of Baltimore, Md.
In addition, Nason was able
to accelerate the ED expansion phase to be completed 9 months
ahead of schedule. Christiana Care now has one of the largest
EDs on the East Coast.
The ABC National Excellence in Construction awards program is
widely recognized at the industry’s premier awards program and
is currently in its 16th year with more than 300
entries from around the country submitted every year. Only
projects that have won at their local ABC chapter are eligible
for submission.
Not only did Nason win the top 2005 Excellence in Construction
Award for its category at ABC Delaware, but they also won other
top regional construction awards for the Christiana Care Medical
Building Expansion. These include a 2005 Construction Excellence
Award from the Delaware Contractors Association, and the 2005
Institutional Project of the Year from McGraw Hill’s
Mid-Atlantic Construction award program which includes
projects from MD, NJ, PA, DE, and VA.
Established in 1922, Nason Construction provides construction
