Ocean Pines,
MD—
Started as a summer retreat for retirees in the late 1960s, the
waterfront retirement community of Ocean Pines is about to get
its first independent living facility.
The official
groundbreaking ceremony for a new three-story, 62,000 square
foot independent living residence was held on Wednesday, July
27. The 52 unit facility will be located off Ocean Parkway in
south Ocean Pines adjacent to an existing 32 unit assisted
living facility called Catered Living of Ocean Pines, owned by
Dr. Richard Handelman. Long time members of the community Hal
Glick and Robert Warfield joined with Handelman to form
Independent Living of Ocean Pines, LLC, and bring this new
independent living facility to the area.
“There is
nothing like it in Ocean Pines,” said Jim Schofield, the owners’
representative, noting the reason they decided to build an
independent living facility. “Worcester
County and Ocean Pines need a place where people can retire and
live independently, while having services available to make life
easier.”
Worcester
County Commissioner Judith O’Hara Boggs, who spoke at the
groundbreaking ceremony, reiterated Schofield’s comment saying
that this new senior housing will fill a gap in the community,
enabling the area to provide housing to people in every stage of
life.
Nason
Construction, Inc., locally based in Salisbury, will provide
construction management services for the project, estimated to
cost $8 million. Construction will begin soon after the
groundbreaking and is expected to be complete by May 2006. Nason
Construction
has an extensive portfolio of senior living facilities and
recently completed the award-winning Emergency Department
Expansion at
Atlantic
General Hospital in nearby Berlin, Md.
“From all of
our experiences,
Nason
Construction is a first class operation that produces quality
work, and we know that they will deliver,” Handelman said at the
groundbreaking. Other key members of the team that Handelman
praised for making this project possible were the project
architect, Iott Architecture & Engineering, Inc., and the civil
engineer, Soule & Associates, P.C. – also based in
Salisbury,
Md.
According to
an information packet from the owners, Independent Living is
designed for individuals who can live without assistance but
desire the security and conveniences of a condominium where
services are provided. These services include housekeeping,
evening meal, 24-hour security, van service, and high speed
internet and cable access for each condominium. In addition, the
facility features common areas with a home theater, game and
card room, hair and nail salon, dining room, and physical
fitness area as well as a courtyard where residents may garden
and lounge.
