Nason Construction signs contract for State's first Veterans Home.

Dover, DE—Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and other state officials gathered in Legislative Hall on Tuesday, April 12 at 2 p.m. to sign the contract for the State of Delaware Veterans Home with design-builder Nason Construction, Inc.

The total contract value is nearly $25 million for the new, 150-bed skilled care nursing facility that will be located on 23 acres in the Milford Business Park at the intersection of Canterbury and Airport roads in Milford, Del. Construction on the project is slated to begin late this summer and be completed December 2006.

Currently one of three states without a veterans home, the State of Delaware selected the design-build team of Nason Construction and GBQC/Becker Morgan JV in late February to construct the 105,000 square foot facility.

The Nason Construction design-build team was selected largely due to firm’s bid and the recent experience of Nason Construction, headquartered in Wilmington, and Becker Morgan Group of Dover constructing the award-winning, new $18.9 million mortuary at Dover Air Force Base, which was delivered utilizing the design-build method. Also, GBQC Architects, from Philadelphia, Penn., contributed to the team with their experience in the design of the Delaware Valley Veterans Home in Philadelphia.

“It is a great honor and privilege to be given the opportunity to work with the State of Delaware and the Veterans Administration in designing and constructing this long-awaited facility for our local veterans,” Michael Berardi, President of Nason Construction, said.

The Nason Construction design-build team is responsible for the planning, design and construction of the facility. The State chose to utilize the design-build project delivery method because it provides a single point of contact for the owner and works well for projects, such as this, that are schedule-driven.

Since award of the project, the Nason Construction design team has evolved the original design concept into a “town square” scheme where the public areas, such as the dining room, library, chapel, and game room, are centrally located and flanked by the residential wings.

Established in 1922, Nason Construction, Inc. provides design-build, construction management, and general contracting services for commercial, institutional, and government clients in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Nason Construction maintains regional offices in Philadelphia, Penn. and Salisbury, Md. Their clients include Christiana Care Health System, US Army Corps of Engineers, Bayhealth Medical Center, Commerce Bank, and the University of Delaware.
