Milford, DE—
The
heat and humidity of an August noon did not keep hundreds of
veterans and several high-ranking state officials from
participating in the groundbreaking ceremony for the State of
Delaware Veterans Home in Milford.
The official
groundbreaking ceremony for the new 105,000 square foot, 150-bed
skilled care nursing facility was held at
11 a.m. on
Aug. 15. However design-builder Nason Construction, Inc. has
been working on the 23-acre site at the intersection of
Canterbury and Airport roads for the last few months.
Governor Ruth
Ann Minner, Senator Joseph Biden, Senator Thomas Carper, and
Congressman Michael Castle each addressed the crowd of more than
500, most of whom were veterans clad in their military colors.
“It could be
said that those of you who are going to live here have literally
paved the way for freedom,” Biden said during his remarks. “In
constructing this Veterans Home, we are paying back a debt of
gratitude we owe to the veteran community.”
Carper
observed that the overwhelming theme throughout the ceremony was
the sense of gratitude for those who have served and are
currently serving in the military. He also noted that the number
of veterans in
Sussex County
is growing faster than almost any other county in the country.
The ceremony
also included the presentation of a check in the sum of
$19,478,301 from the Federal Government to the State of
Delaware. It
was announced several weeks ago that these funds had been
allocated from the Federal Government for its contribution of
65% of construction costs for the Veterans Home.
Additional
thanks were given to those making the construction of the $29
million facility possible. This includes Nason Construction,
Becker Morgan Group, Inc., GBQC Architects, and Bernardon Haber
Holloway, Architects PC.
The
Nason
Construction
design-build team is responsible for the planning, design and
construction of the facility, which is anticipated to be
complete in December 2006.
