Philadelphia, PA— Six months of arduous construction in two of Philadelphia’s tallest skyscrapers culminated last week in the final phase of moving 953 employees into Sunoco Inc.’s new corporate headquarters. With their lease in Ten Penn Center expiring, Sunoco announced last year that it had leased 221,000 square feet in the 54-story Mellon Bank Center at 1735 Market Street, for the next 15 years. Philadelphia-based Nason Construction, Inc. provided construction management services for the renovation of 10 floors in the pyramid-topped Mellon Bank Center for Sunoco’s corporate staff and logistics subsidiary headquarters. Totaling $16 million, the project also included the renovation of several floors in the 40-story 1818 Market St. high rise for the oil refinery’s operations center. In order to complete this extensive renovation project in the six-month fast track schedule, Nason Construction managed crews on site around the clock and worked up to 7,600 man hours per week. More than 30 consultants and subcontractors from the Philadelphia area worked together with Nason Construction, Northstar–the owner’s representative, and Gensler–the New York based architect, to complete the project within the stringent timeframe. Simultaneous renovations involved floors 10 through 16, floors 27 to 29, and a basement level in the Mellon Bank Center. Additionally, 20,000 square feet in the adjacent building at 1818 Market St. was renovated – floors 14 and 15 and the concourse and sub-concourse levels. Construction crews successfully maneuvered materials throughout the two facilities, with little disturbance to the businesses that occupied floors above and below the construction zones. The 27th and 28th floors house the executive suite and feature high-end finishes with custom millwork throughout. The remaining floors are traditional office space with one floor dedicated to stock trading and the other utilized as a state-of-the-art information technology room. All floors have top of the line security systems and telecommunications hardware, including the basement level P-2, which contains the shipping and receiving area for Sunoco. Move-ins were phased over four weekends starting in early June in order to smoothly relocate the nearly 1,000 employees from Ten Penn Center into their new space. The executive floors were the last to move-in, opening for business on July 11. Established in 1922, Nason Construction provides construction management, design-build and general contracting services for both public and private clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.
