Nason Completes New Kent County Courthouse
Courthouse is first CM-At-Risk project for the State
Dover, DE, August 31, 2011: Nason Construction recently celebrated the opening of the new Kent County Courthouse in Dover, DE. The project was the first CM-At-Risk completed by the Office of Management and Budget, Division of Facilities Management.
Opening celebrations were attended by Governor Jack Markell, Chief Justice Myron T. Steele, Superior Court President Judge James T. Vaughn, Jr., Kent County Resident Judge William L. Witham, Jr., and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Ann Visalli.
The new, three-story, 148,600 square-foot facility was completed on-budget and ahead of schedule, and features seven courtrooms, including hearing rooms, and an arraignment courtroom. The facility houses the Superior Court, Court of Common Pleas, Department of Corrections, Capitol Police, and probation officers.
State-of-the-art energy efficient features were incorporated into the design by Nason and the architectural team of Moeckel Carbonell/Ricci Greene Associates. Sustainable features include solar panels, a partial green-roof, water reducing bathroom fixtures, lighting controls with light harvesting technology, and energy efficient electric transformers.
Unique features of the building include significant architectural millwork finishes in the courtrooms, detention and holding cells with isolated elevators for prisoner transport, and high-tech security systems including closed circuit television, access controls, and comprehensive data and telecommunications systems.
Work also includes construction of an underground parking garage to serve the needs of the judicial complex.
“The Nason team is very proud to have provided this building to support the Delaware Judiciary, the State, and Kent County,” said Nason Chief Executive Officer Thomas W. Nason, II. “We are honored to have the chance to work with the Office of Management and Budget, Division of Facilities Management on their first CM-At-Risk project, especially when it will serve so many individuals throughout Delaware.”
