Description
Nason Construction was selected to build a new $10 million nursing school for Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE. This project was completed in a single phase, combining both the new construction and renovation projects.
Three buildings originally existed on the site of the new school. Of the three buildings, two were demolished and one was erected in their place. The new building includes two, six-bed skills laboratories and two, one-bed skills laboratories outfitted like modern hospital rooms, as well as classroom, administrative, and conference room spaces. The third building undertook mechanical and cosmetic upgrades and renovations, while Nason ensured uninterrupted operations for Beebe.
Nason worked with Beebe and the design team throughout the entire process in both a consulting and partnership role. Extensive time was spent with value engineering to assist in budgeting. Partnering with various consultants and working closely with the architect, owner, and subcontractors, Nason was able to provide a savings strategy to Beebe that brought a potential 10% decrease in initial costs.
Another method in which Nason delivered additional value was through the transition of our contracting model. Originally bid as a lump sum project, Nason and Beebe collaborated to create a new Construction Management contract, which resulted in additional cost savings to Beebe Healthcare.
The construction schedule was difficult and we worked hard to keep the project on track while safely maintaining the project site before, during, and after the school year. The project posed many challenges, including the harsh winter which brought some managed days lost due to weather. The scheduled was maintained throughout construction, and the project was completed in time to accommodate the upcoming fall semester.
